Description: Handsome large-format fold-out color lithographed map of Europe and the Near East at the beginning of the Second World War, printed more than 84 years ago. This map opens to a generous 86.3 x 99 cm [34" x 39"] and has wonderful detail throughout, on a scale of 1:6,000,000, or 94.7 miles to one inch. Topography is delineated by color shading, and details include railroads, canals, tunnels, passes, oil pipe lines, cities, towns, and more. The coverage area exends from Iceland to the Persian Gulf, and there is an inset plan of the Middle East. Political boundaries are drawn as they existed at the time, with Austria shown as part of Germany and Poland divided between the Soviet Union and Hitler's Germany. In the Near East, the map labels Latakia, Lebanon, Palestine, Gaza, Jerusalem, Damascus, Trans-Jordan, and the Levant States (French Mandate). This map was publshed by the National Geographic Society as a supplement to its May 1940 magazine, eight months after Germany invaded Poland. Condition: It is in very good condition, bright and clean, with no rips, tears, or writing. The map folds to 10" x 6½" and is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
