Antique Pendant by Darmstadt Founder R. Bosselt Jugendstil Fahrner Era Germany

Description: Antique Pendant by Rudolf Bosselt, One of the Original Founding Members of the Darmstadt Artist Colony Wonderful antique c1901 pendant designed by Rudolf Bosselt, an important German sculptor, jeweler, medalist, educational reformer and a founding member of the seminal Darmstadt Colony (for more information re Bosselt please continue reading below for Wikipedia biography excerpt). Whimsical design depicting a pair of birds facing each other and holding between their co-joined beaks a single strand of three river pearls on a delicate silver chain. The back of the piece shows evidence of an old conversion most likely from a brooch to pendant. It looks as though the original pin back has been removed, and two tiny loops and simple chain were added to the top. A brooch with the same design and marks is featured on p. 175 of the reference book Schmuck in Deutschland and Osterreich 1894-1914 by Urike von Hase (albeit with an amethyst on a chain instead of pearls). Back of pendant is marked Depose (German legal mark), 800 (silver content mark), and Bosselt's maker's mark. Approximate weight of 6.5 grams. The enamel is in very good condition and the pearls still have a very good luster. This piece has been somewhat polished revealing the aged mellowed silver surface. Overall this piece is in very good age appropriate antique condition.(Measurements are listed further below). Following Excerpt Translated From German Wikipedia: Paul Gustav Rudolf Bosselt (* June 29 1871 in Mount Pearl , † January 2nd 1938 in Berlin ) was a German sculptor , medalist and educational reformer.Bosselt one of the leading representatives of Art Nouveau in Germany and an innovator in the German Medal of Arts. He created numerous small sculptures (portrait and exhibition medals and plaques), grave and fountain figures, animal figures and portrait busts. His tomb is located on the Southwest Stahnsdorf . After completing an apprenticeship as an engraver in a bronze foundry in Berlin, he was with the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Charlottenburg active. From 1891 to 1897 he was a pupil of Joseph Kowarzik at the Städel Institute in Frankfurt / M. He then went to Paris to the Académie Julian . From 1899 he was a founder member of the Darmstadt artists' colony . On the recommendation of Peter Behrens from 1904 he taught at the School of Applied Arts Dusseldorf . At the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1910, he designed a highly acclaimed exhibition of his medals and plaques. In 1911 he took over the leadership of the director of Decorative Arts and Crafts School Magdeburg , whose teaching program it within the meaning of the German Werkbund redesigned. After criticism of Bruno Taut in this teaching program Bosselt left Magdeburg and took over from 1928 to 1931 head of the School of Applied Arts in Braunschweig . In September 1931 he went back to Berlin to succeed Otto Marcus to be as general secretary of the National Association of Visual Artists of Germany. After detachment from that office he was responsible for management of the magazine Art and Science. In 1932 he represented at the Olympic Games Germany with the "Constitution Plaque 1931" in the art competitions.
