Description: 1911 Turkey Red (T9) - #61 Johnny Marto, Checklist Back - PSA Authentic On the Set - The Turkey Red Cabinets Set, also known as T3 and T9, was manufactured in 1910 and 1911 under the banner of the American Tobacco Company. This set comprises 100 cards or cabinets, crafted on sturdy cardstock, and they boast impressive dimensions, measuring a substantial 5 3/4" x 8". Each of these cards showcases a vibrant full-color lithograph set against a thick border, with the subject's name and team (if applicable) presented in a bottom banner. The T3 Turkey Red cabinets spotlighting baseball players are sequentially numbered from #1 to #50 and from #77 to #126. Card numbers 51 to 76 are dedicated to featuring pictures of boxers and form a distinct T9 set. These cabinet cards were exclusively designed for favored tobacco customers and were obtainable as premium rewards in exchange for coupons from three different cigarette brands: Turkey Red, Old Mill, or Fez Cigarettes. Many collectors consider the Turkey Red cards as one of the most aesthetically captivating sports card series ever created. On the Subject - Johnny Marto was a lightweight boxer active in the early 20th century, though the available records are somewhat incomplete. He fought notable opponents such as Jack Britton, Ted "Kid" Lewis, Leach Cross, Abe Attell, Jim Driscoll, and many other prominent fighters of the time. In his 112 documented bouts, Marto was never knocked out and was only knocked down once, by Jim Bonner in New York on November 2, 1911—a fight Marto won by newspaper decision. (Before the current system of using three judges and the ten-point scoring system, decisions were often made by attending sportswriters after a fight ended in a "no decision.") In addition to the fights listed in his record, it is believed that Marto had several unrecorded bouts.
