Plant poppy seeds in the Autumn or late spring after the threat of frost has subsided. These seeds have already been properly stratified and are ready for planting. If you do not intend on planting them right away, store the seeds in a cool, dark place. The produce drawer of your refrigerator makes a good location for storage. Before sowing, soak seeds in water for 12-24 hours. Select a sunny spot with well draining, sandy type soil. Alternately, if growing indoors, make sure that you have a cool, sunny place for them. If using artificial light, start off at 25-50% power and gradually increase the intensity as they mature.To sow, scatter the seeds sparingly (pre-mixing the seeds in a cup of soil will help to distribute them more evenly). Lightly sprinkle a fine haze of dry soil on top of them - no more than 1/16" of soil as poppy seeds need light in order to germinate. Spray down the seeds and soil gently. Mist the soil whenever it appears dry, taking care not to saturate the seeds. Germination occurs in 7-20 days. Reduce frequency of irrigation once poppies reach 2-3” high as they do not like damp growing conditions. Do not plant poppy seeds in hot weather. Poppy are cold weather plants and as such they do not germinate well in hot weather. Poppies do not do well as transplants, so it is best to sow them where you intend to grow them to maturity. If you must transplant them, then it is important that you do not molest the roots. If you are sowing them with the intention of moving them later, start them out in peat or coconut coir pods and place the original pods into the new location without altering the original pods, taking care not to place into an area where puddling or washout of the seedlings will occur.
